James D. Wright (July 8, 1930 - August 5, 2019)
Commander James D. Wright USN (Ret) 89, of Leesburg, Florida crossed over the bar on August 5, 2019. Jim was born on July 8, 1930 in Harlan, Kentucky to Lucy (Walls) Wright and Walker Wright. He was proud of his Appalachian American heritage. He graduated from Belfry High School in 1948. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy on June 5, 1953 and married Betty Lou Lowery on that day. After six years of sea duty having served in surface ships and submarines he attended U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California and received a B.S. Degree in Electrical Engineering. Subsequently, he served as Executive Officer on the USS Argonaut (SS475), Blue Crew Navigator on the USS John C. Calhoun (SSBN 630), Executive Officer on the USS Elokomin (AO 55), CNO Naval Intelligence Command and then to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard for his twilight tour and retirement. Afterwards, Betty and Jim moved to Florida to enjoy the sunshine. He was predeceased by Betty in 1999, and is survived by his daughter, Bonnie Mumford (Larry), of North East, Maryland and his grandchildren, Elizabeth Mumford and Eric Mumford. The final resting place will be Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
