Obituary (VA): Mrs. Carra (Jay N. Dewing '51)

Carra Nicholls Dillard Dewing died July 3, 2018 after a short illness. Nicky was born July 28, 1929 in Charlottesville, VA, the daughter of George Budd Dillard and Carra Garrett Dillard. She spent most of her early life in Williamsburg, VA graduating from Matthew Whaley in 1946 and from the College of William & Mary in 1950. At William & Mary, Mrs. Dewing was active in student government and the Flat Hat. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and Mortar Board. At graduation Nicky received the Sullivan Award. While living in Williamsburg, Mrs. Dewing worked part time at the Daily Press, Binn's and as a hostess for Colonial Williamsburg. On June 19, 1951, she married Jay Norman Dewing at Bruton Parish Church in Williamsburg, VA. Ensign Dewing graduated from the Naval Academy in 1951. As a Navy wife, Mrs. Dewing enjoyed living in New London, CT where her husband was in the submarine service. Later they spent many years in Springfield, VA, retired to York County and later to Williamsburg. Mr. Dewing died in 2006. Aside from her family and friends, Mrs. Dewing's greatest love was her flowers. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed flower arranging. While living in Northern Virginia she had a dried flower business. Mrs. Dewing was a member of Green Spring Garden Club and the Colonial Dames. She was active in several Episcopal churches. Her other interests including reading, sailing, antiques, word games, and bridge. She was known for her quirky sense of humor. Mrs. Dewing is survived by son Clark and wife Susie of Yorktown, VA, daughter Caroline Hines and husband Dennis of Gainesville, FL, and son Jim and wife Maria of Springfield, VA. Her grandchildren are: Andrew and Evan Hines of Gainesville, FL, Carra Dewing of Boston, MA and Colleen Dewing of Springfield, VA. In lieu of flowers, Mrs. Dewing has asked that donations be made to a food bank or charity of your choice.
