Obituary (NY): Mrs. Claudia (Craig D. Uffman '82)

Posted on 06/15/2017

Claudia Schaedel Uffman  (December 17, 1959 - June 1, 2017)

Survived by her husband, The Rev. Dr. Craig D. Uffman; son, Andrew Kerry (Amanda) Uffman; daughters, Callie and Emilie Uffman; parents, Kenneth W. and Hedy Schaedel; sister, Donna E. (Donald) Knutson. Claudia was a beloved wife, mother, teacher, and friend.

Claudia met her husband, Craig, at a late summer dance at the U.S. Naval Academy, where he had just finished his plebe summer. The couple fell in love in Annapolis, after a first date sharing mint chocolate chip ice cream. After her graduation from Goucher College in Maryland, they were married in 1982 at the U.S. Naval Academy Chapel.

While her husband served in the submarine force, Claudia's creative spirit and roles as a wife and mother flourished. While the couple was stationed at Norfolk, Claudia gave birth to her son Andrew and studied interior design at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts. Her sketchbook from that time is a treasure to her family.

When the couple moved to Baton Rouge, LA, they lived surrounded by beloved family for seventeen years, and Claudia gave birth to her two daughters, Callie and Emilie. She continued to develop her roles as teacher, nurturer of her children and their friends, and community member, leading Andrew's Cub Scout troop and Callie's Girl Scout troop and leading her church's Vacation Bible School.

Claudia was known to families in Louisiana, North Carolina, and Western New York as a teacher dedicated to the intellectual growth and character development of her students, as well as her own children. When the family moved to Raleigh, NC, Claudia completed her K-12 teaching certification at Meredith College. She worked with students of all ages, but most recently taught fourth and fifth grade students at Jeffreys Grove Elementary School in Raleigh, NC and middle school English Language Arts at the Charles Finney School in Rochester, NY.

A Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established in her honor. The scholarship will be given to an exemplary middle school student at the Charles Finney School who exhibits selflessness, a love of learning, perseverance in the face of difficulties, and support for others, qualities Claudia identified as important and exhibited herself.

A Funeral Service will be held Monday, June 5th, 7 PM at Christ Episcopal Church, 36 South Main St., Pittsford. Memorial donations may be directed to the Claudia Uffman Memorial Scholarship c/o The Charles Finney School, 2070 Five Mile Line Rd., Penfield, NY 14526.
