Posted on 08/21/2023

CRAIG ALAN SMITH  (MAY 9, 1951 - AUGUST 13, 2023)

Craig Alan Smith, 72, a resident of Cape Coral, FL since 2013, formerly of Virginia Beach, VA, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2023 in Cape Coral. He was born May 9, 1951 in Pensacola, FL to James and Ruby Smith, now deceased.

Craig was of the Christian faith. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy – Class of 1974 – and was perhaps one of the staunchest supporters of the Academy football team. He was a passionate and accomplished naval aviator having served on the USS Nimitz, Coral Sea, and America, and proudly defended his country in the conflicts in the Middle East. He often reflected on his experiences as a Radar Intercept Officer on the F-14 Tomcat and as an Aircraft Handler. His friends and family will fondly remember his oft retold “sea stories” which showcased the humor, passion, and impeccable work ethic that he brought to his service. After retiring from the Navy, Craig had more time to devote to the creative arts and he loved to draw, paint, and work with wood.

He is survived by his loving wife since 1981, Roxanna Smith of Cape Coral; daughter, Jamie Smith and son-in-law, Andrew Kerle of Australia; nieces, Lauren Wojtkun, Melinda Pate, and Layla Wilson; as well as nephews, Jonathan Wojtkun and Jeff Jones.

A private celebration of life will be held by the family at a later date.

Memorial contributions in memory of Craig Alan Smith are suggested to his favorite midshipmen football team at www.navysports.com/donate.

Mullins Memorial Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Cape Coral, is entrusted with final care.
