Obituary (TX): Richard Ludlow Thomas '53

Richard L. Thomas passed away on Sunday, March 1, 2020, in Katy, at the age of 88. He was born on May 4, 1931 in Houston, Texas to J. Lonnie and Shirley Cowen Thomas. He attended Lamar High School and graduated from Rice University. On November 25, 1953, he married Shirley Barr in Houston, Texas. He attended the Naval Academy for a year and served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1954 until 1956. Richard and Shirley were members of Westbury United Methodist Church until 1981. From 1981 to 1990 they lived in Chicago in the Northbrook area while Richard spearheaded Arthur Andersen's worldwide training program. They moved to Breckenridge, Colorado after he retired in 1990 and lived there until moving back to Houston full time in 2015, after dividing their time between Breckenridge and Houston for many years. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Thomas of Katy; daughter, Karen Martiny and her husband Vic of Fruita, Colorado, daughter Merry Kay Romero and her husband Matt of Fulshear; brother, Harry Thomas and his wife Charla of Boerne, brother, Steve Thomas and his wife Lynda of Richmond, and brother, Jack Thomas of Boerne; grandson, Bradley Engbrecht and his wife, Jillian, and their daughter, Amelia of Dallas; granddaughter, Erica Engbrecht and her son, Tyler Nabors of Washington DC; as well as numerous other relatives and friends. A celebration of Richard's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 14 at The Atria, 24001 Cinco Village Center Boulevard, Katy, TX.
