Luanne Harrison Mortimer  (January 25, 1938 - January 29, 2020)

Mrs. Margaret Luanne Harrison Mortimer passed away on January 29, 2020 Riverside Healthy Living Community in Smithfield Virginia.  She had been in poor health for the last year or so as a result of an extended illness.   She was born in Norfolk VA, the daughter of Charles L. and Elizabeth B. Harrison.   She grew up in the Ocean View area, attended Granby High and frequently hitched a ride on her grandfather's fire engine.  Upon graduation from Granby High, she enrolled at then Mary Washington College, graduating with the Class of 1959 and started her teaching career.  Shortly after graduation she married Edmund Craig Mortimer, then a lieutenant in the U S Navy. During her married life she accompanied her husband to such diverse areas as Long Island, Norfolk, Pearl Harbor, Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin, Korea and Washington DC.  She was a constant participant in women's club activities at all duty stations, particularly if they included knitting, crocheting or any other activities involving needles and yarn.  She even found time to play golf, recording the only hole-in-one in the family.  After her husband's retirement from the service, they moved to New Orleans where he was employed as shipyard manager at Avondale Shipyard.  Upon his second retirement, they moved to Smithfield VA where she has made many friends and continued involvement in community supportive efforts.  Besides her husband of 60 years, she is survived by three daughters, Anne Craig (Dana), Pamela (Woody) and Elizabeth (Glenn), twelve grandchildren and five great grandchildren. She also is survived by a sister, Charla Marcel (Dave) of Heathsville, VA.  A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8th, at Little’s Funeral Home in Smithfield. Interment will be at a later date at the U S Naval Academy. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that contributions to the American Cancer Society be made in memory of Luanne.  Online condolences may be registered at www.littlesfuneralhome.com.
