Posted on 11/13/2019

Ruth Wilson Cain  (APRIL 8, 1921 – OCTOBER 3, 2019)

Ruth Eleanor Wilson Cain, born on April 8, 1921 to Dr. and Mrs. J. A. Wilson in Meriden, CT, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2019.

Ruth grew up in the northeast in a small town where her father was the town doctor. She was a Connecticut Yankee through and through. She was encouraged to do well in school as well as participate in sports such as field hockey, tennis, golf, swimming and skiing. She attended St. Margaret’s School in Waterbury, Connecticut followed by Connecticut College for Women in New London. While there she met her husband to be, Mat Murry Cain, Jr., an Annapolis graduate Class of 1940, who was in submarine school in Groton, Connecticut Mat, nicknamed Sugar, and Ruth married on July 7, 1942 when Sugar had a long weekend of leave.

Ruth was a stalwart Navy wife managing and handling all the details of family life while Sugar was away on extended sea duty all over the world. They had two daughters, Claudia and Susan, and the family moved from East Coast to West Coast several times as well as to the Philippine Islands.

In 1960, Sugar retired, changed his name back to Mat and the family moved to Buffalo, New York . After 17 years there with both daughters educated and married, they moved to Bryan, Texas in 1978. Mat worked at Texas A & M and Ruth became a small businesswoman opening a needlework shop called The Stitchery. Despite her Yankee background, she became known for having many “Aggie” designs to be needlepointed and or cross stitched on “Aggie” maroon fabric. They embraced the “Aggie” lifestyle while living in Bryan and attended all the football games. Mat passed away in 2003 and Ruth came to the ARC in 2005 where she started out in a cottage on McHenry St. She worked her way through the High Rise, Lakeside Assisted Living and recently she moved to Health Care.

She is survived by her two daughters, Claudia Stephens and her husband, Charles H. Stephens, Susan Bell, 5 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. The 5th great grandchild is due to be born on November 17th. His middle name will be Cain.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Lakeside Assisted Living as well as Alamo Hospice for their kindness, patience and respect while attending to Mrs. Cain around the clock.
