Obituary (NY): Edward Michael Dower '55

Edward M. Dower Sr., 86, of Oneonta, passed away Tuesday, August 6, 2019 at the A.O. Fox Memorial Hospital, Oneonta. He was born Jan. 27, 1933, in Troy, the son of the late Maurice and Margaret (Riley) Dower. Ed attended Our Lady of Angels Elementary School and Christian Brothers Academy High School in Green Island. Upon graduating high school, he attended Siena College for a year before entering the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis in July 1951, on a congressional appointment. Upon graduation re received a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as an Ensign in the Navy. He was honorably discharged July 6, 1957. Following active duty, Ed began work for the Delaware & Hudson Railroad as a building and bridges engineer, after years of hard work he retired in 1996. Ed enjoyed gardening and landscaping; spending time with friends and family; playing pranks and joking around with everyone. He was an avid puzzle solver and Sudoku enthusiast. He was a former member of the Sixth Ward Athletic Club and the BPOE (Eagles Lodge). Ed is survived by his wife, Patricia A. (Pitts) Dower; daughter, Michele Dower and husband, Jeff Scheer and their son, Austin Scheer; son, Edward Dower Jr. and wife, Lori Dower and their daughters, Haley and Delaney and son, Nicholas Dower; daughter, Bridget McNalley and her husband, Daniel R. McNally and their daughters, Ashley and Shannon and son, Daniel E. McNally. He was predeceased by his brother, Maurice "Monnie" M. Dower; brother-in-law, Wyman "Cookie" Osterhout; and sister-in-law, Flora S. Pitts. Friends are invited to greet the family from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 8, at the Lester R. Grummons Funeral Home, 14 Grand St., Oneonta. A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug. 9, also at the funeral home with the Rev. David Mickiewicz officiating.
