Obituary (MD): Mrs. Carol (David M. Saunders '45)

Carol Hoke Saunders, 85, of Annapolis died on January 19, 2019 at her residence in Annapolis. Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Emma D. and Howard H. Hoke. In 1955 she received a Bachelor of Arts degree, magna cum laude, from Duke University where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She did graduate work in education at Florida Atlantic University and at Catholic University and received a Master's degree in Education from Loyola College in Baltimore. From 1960 – 1967 she served as a teacher and principal of Saint Mark's Episcopal School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. From 1967 – 1993 she held various positions with the Anne Arundel County Public Schools, including Advanced Placement English instructor, English department chairperson, coordinator of the Instructional Leadership Project, director of the AACPS Administrative Assessment Center, and Administrative Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent of Schools. From 1993 – 1996 she was an English instructor at Anne Arundel Community College and served as consultant to the Advanced Placement Program of the Educational Testing Service, Princeton, NJ and to the College Board, Philadelphia, PA. She was a member of the Altar Guild of St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Anne Arundel Retired Teachers Association, The Caritas Society of St. John's College, the Friends of The Annapolis Symphony, the Friends of the Maryland Federation of Art, the Naval Academy Women's Club, the Naval Academy Garden Club, and the Naval Academy Golf Association. Her interests included golf, bridge, art, computer graphics, needlework, reading and her grandchildren/great grandchildren. She is pre-deceased by one of her step-sons Scott F. Saunders. She is survived by one sister, Judith H. Ball; one daughter, Suellen Chaplin Beckett, one son, John M. Chaplin, seven step-children: David J. Dunigan III, George L. Dunigan, Bruce F. Dunigan, Peter W. Dunigan, Ginna Dunigan Quinn, Mark P. Saunders, Craig W. Saunders and thirteen grandchildren Connor R. Beckett, Ryan K. Beckett, Zachary L. Dunigan, Peter S. Dunigan, Bruce F. Dunigan Jr., Caroline G. Dunigan, John M. Dunigan, Heather S. Benson, Kathleen L. Saunders, Kyle M. Saunders, Saige E. Saunders, Clive W. Saunders, David T. Saunders and two great-grandchildren Rowan K. Benson and Ryder W. Dunigan. Funeral Services will be held at Saint Margaret's Episcopal Church 1601 Pleasant Plains Rd, Annapolis, MD 21409 on February 2nd, 2019 at 2:00 PM. Inurnment at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Scholarships for Scholars c/o Anne Arundel County Public Schools, 2644 Riva Road Annapolis, MD 21401.
