Obituary (VA): Robert Preston Nottingham '48

Commander Robert Preston Nottingham (U.S. Navy Ret.), 92, passed away August 20, 2018 in Lake Prince Woods, Suffolk. Commander Nottingham was born in Norfolk and grew up on the Eastern Shore and Eastville, VA. He was a son of the late Thomas Henry and Clara West Trower Nottingham. He was also predeceased by one sister Clara Nottingham Baldwin and two brothers Thomas Henry Nottingham, Jr. and James Harmanson Nottingham. Bob attended the University of Virginia and was a 1948 graduate of the US Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He was a retired Navy Commander and was a Naval pilot during both the Korean War and Vietnam War and flew missions off of numerous aircraft carriers including the USS Midway. Bob was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was brought up in Christ Episcopal Church in Eastville and more recently a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Portsmouth. He was also a 31 year member of AA.

Left to cherish his memory are two beloved nieces Margaret Baldwin Marks and husband John of Charlottesville and Anne Baldwin Bell and husband Ed of New Bern, NC; three great nieces Clara Marks Laing and husband Kevin, Katherine Holland Marks, and Ellen Preston Bell; one great nephew Edwin Lillington Bell, Jr. and wife Lauren; one great-great nephew Robert Nottingham Laing; and two great-great nieces Texie Baldwin Laing and Vivian Baldwin Bell.

A Graveside Service will full Naval Honors will be held in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery, Suffolk, VA. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a favorite charity. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
