Obituary (VA): Paul Skarlatos '54

Captain Paul Skarlatos USN (Ret) Naval Aviator passed away peacefully on July 16, 2018. Beloved husband of Mrs. Patricia Trott-Skarlatos; loving father of Michael, Elizabeth, and Matthew; brother of George and Spero and many nieces and nephews. Paul was predeceased by his first wife Marguerite Ryan. Paul was raised in Rochester NY and attended the University of Michigan, before he was appointed to USNA. Paul received his wings in 1955. He served with Attack Squadron 43 and later with VF 74 aboard the INTREPID. He served as a Bull Prof at the Academy from 1961 to 1964. While at Annapolis, he received a master's degree in foreign affairs from American University. He served aboard the INDEPENDENCE, the SHANGRI LA and the F.D.R. Paul flew F-8 Crusaders in 1970, serving in Vietnam, flying off the BON HOMME RICHARD with VF 53 as XO, and later, as CO. He served as personnel officer on the staff of the Commander, Naval Forces, Atlantic Fleet. Paul served with the Bureau of Naval Personnel in Washington D.C. and was promoted Captain January 1, 1975. Paul was a Distinguished Graduate of the Naval and National War Colleges. Personal decorations include the Bronze Star with "V," Navy Commendation Medal, Air Medal, and several campaign medals. Following his retirement in 1978, he earned a master's degree in IT from American University and worked for TRW, JGW, and later formed and was president of Systematic Inc. US Visitation for Paul will be held at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, 8601 Wolftrap Road, Vienna, VA on Monday July 30 from 2 to 3 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel at 3 p.m. Paul will be laid to rest at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.
