Obituary (UT): Mrs. Marian (James J. Whetton '45)

Posted on 07/03/2018

Marian Frances Bader Whetton passed away peacefully on June 26, 2018, surrounded by her family. Her 96 years began February 19, 1922, in Ogden Utah. She was the third of five children born to Edwin Charles Bader and Frances Elizabeth Van Namee. She attended Polk Elementary, Mt. Fort Junior High, and graduated from Ogden High School. Following graduation, she attended Weber College where she received an Associate Degree. While at Ogden High School, she met her future husband, James J. Whetton. While he attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Marian worked at the Sperry Mills testing lab. Marian and Jim were married on June 8, 1944, the day Jim graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Their marriage was later solemnized in May of 1990, in the Ogden, Utah, LDS Temple. The newlyweds lived in New York, Connecticut, and Florida while Jim served his country. After leaving the Navy, Marian and Jim returned to Utah to begin raising their family. Together they raised five children, Frances Sneddon (Barry), Jim Whetton (Ken), Alan Whetton (Kathy), Leslie Hammer (Doug), and Mark Whetton (Susan). When Jim was recalled during the Korean conflict, the family moved to southern California, where Marian and the children waited for their husband and father's return. Marian and the three oldest children lived in Downey and Long Beach while Jim served his country once again. When he returned, they moved to Whittier, California. Two more children were added to the family. Marian gave her all in raising their five children. She was an amazing cook and served her husband and children with love and sacrifice. In 1960 the family moved back to Utah. Marian and Jim continued to raise their family in Harrisville where they lived for over 50 years. During their 73 years of marriage their family grew from five children to 20 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild with one on the way. Marian's love and devotion to her sweetheart serve as a powerful example to her family and all who knew her. Her weekly family meals where the family gathered to enjoy her delicious cooking and the love of family built the ties that bind families forever. Marian is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 73 years, her three brothers, Robert Bader, Gordon Bader, and Alan Bader, two grandchildren, Lisa Marie Hammer, and Tandon Mark Whetton, and her son-in-law Ken Peters. She is survived by her sister, Elizabeth Payne, sister-in-law Gladys Bader, five children, 18 grandchildren, 45 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
