John Crosby Marshall  (April 11, 1929 - June 15, 2018)

John Crosby Marshall passed away peacefully at his home in Thousand Oaks, California, on June 15, 2018 surrounded by his loving family. John was born on April 11, 1929 to William and Genevieve Marshall in Milford, Connecticut. In family tradition dating over 200 years, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was promptly selected to attend the U.S. Naval Academy (class of 1952). While enrolled in school, he met his love and lifelong companion Barbara Myers (Marshall) and they were married at the Academy in 1954. John's naval career spanned 18 years where he served aboard many ships including the U.S.S. Wisconsin, the U.S.S. Rich, and the U.S.S. Pine Island. He also graduated from submarine school and served on the U.S.S. Sea Leopard. From 1957 to 1960, John was assigned to Yokosuka, Japan, as a Communications Officer. He and his family lived in Hiyama and Yokohama. John left the Navy in 1963 due to tuberculosis but thankfully recovered. After the Navy, John pursued a career in electrical engineering with Southern California Edison. In 1975 John and Barbara left Southern California for Alaska, where John was the Chief Engineer for Chugach Electric. While in Alaska, John pursued his passion for the outdoors – fishing, hiking and sightseeing throughout the state with Barbara and his two sons. In 1986, John relocated again to Burlington, Vermont, where he became Chief Engineer for Green Mountain Power. In 1998, John and Barbara retired to Thousand Oaks, California, to be near their children and grandchildren. In retirement, John volunteered with the Thousand Oaks Police Department, the Reagan Library, and the Thousand Oaks United Methodist Church. John is survived by his wife of 64 years, Barbara, who continues his legacy of service to the community. John is also survived by his sons Col. William C. Marshall (Ret.) (Shelly), John A. Marshall, Esq. (Julia), grandchildren John T. Marshall and Camryn Marshall, and great-grandchildren John Q. Marshall and Liam A. Marshall. A memorial service will be held at the Thousand Oaks United Methodist Church, 1000 Janss Road on Saturday, June 23, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Thousand Oaks United Methodist Church.
