Obituary (VA): John Kaufman '46

John Kaufman, of Charlottesville, formerly of North Chesterfield, passed away Thursday, May 3, 2018. He was born in the borough of Manhattan in New York City in 1922, to the late Abraham and Bessie Kaufman. After graduating from Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn, New York, in 1938, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. As an enlistee, he gained admission to the U.S. Naval Academy. Upon graduating from Annapolis in three years due to WWII, he served on the USS Maryland until the end of the war. During his Naval career, he returned to Annapolis to teach, and was stationed in various locales including Norfolk, Virginia, Chinhae, Korea and San Diego, California. It was during his deployment in San Diego that he was aboard the USS Eldorado during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Upon retirement, he enrolled at Penn State University for graduate studies. After graduation, he relocated his family to Virginia, where he taught engineering until retirement. He was predeceased by his wife, Darlene Kaufman, in 2014. He is survived by a daughter, Lori Kaufman of Charlottesville; a son, Michael Kaufman and wife, Lynn, of Virginia Beach; one grandson, Jeremy Thomas and wife, Sierra, of Alexandria; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, Francis Kaufman, Jean Kaufman, Solomon Kaufman, Anna Kaufman, Herman Kaufman, Nathaniel Kaufman and Sandra Herman Fuller. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, June 3, at Congregation Beth Israel in Charlottesville. He and his wife will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery on June 27. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that a donation be made in his honor to Congregation Beth Israel, 301 E. Jefferson St., Charlottesville, Va. 22902.
