Obituary (PA): Mrs. Betty (Daniel L. Cooper '57)

Posted on 05/29/2018

Betty Ogilvie Cooper, 82, of Lancaster, PA, died Thursday, May 24, 2018 after a lengthy illness at the Willow Valley Retirement Community. Born in Pittsburgh, PA, she was the daughter of the late William and Louise Ferguson Ogilvie. She was the wife of VADM Daniel L. Cooper for 60 years.

Betty grew up in East Liverpool, Ohio and graduated from Muskingum College. Throughout her long and very productive life, she could be best described as a servant leader. A devout Christian woman, she served the Lord in every aspect of her life. As the wife of a career Naval Officer, she was committed to supporting the wives of the men who served with Dan in the submarine force and fund raising for those in the submarine community most in need. She was a leader in many of the churches and community organizations to which she belonged, to include serving as co-leader of the Stephen Ministry at the First Presbyterian Church in Reading, PA. She selflessly spent time with her grandchildren, hosting them at "Camp Ooma" and at her favorite vacation spot in Capon Springs, WV. She was a model wife, mother, grandmother and Christian woman, and she touched the lives of so many people, spreading the love of Christ by her personal example. She was member of Harvest Presbyterian Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters: Amy, wife of CAPT (ret.) Jeff Hughes, Saratoga Springs, NY and Cynthia, wife of CAPT (ret.) Don Rose, Spanish Fort, AL, six grandchildren: Sarah Shuey (Douglas), LT Stephen Hughes (Charlotte), ENS Kathryn Hughes, Andrew Rose, ENS Daniel Rose, and Midshipman Christopher Rose, and one brother, Dr. Daniel M. Ogilvie (Renee), Piscataway, NJ.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to Betty's Memorial Service at Harvest Presbyterian Church, 517 Beaver Valley Pike, Lancaster, PA on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend William Massey officiating. Reception to follow the service. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Interment will be held at US Naval Academy Cemetery, Annapolis, MD at a later date.
