Obituary (TX): Lawrence Eugene Marshall '84

Commander Lawrence Eugene Marshall, USN, Retired, age 56, passed away on Tuesday, March 13, 2018. Growing up in Ohio, Indiana, and Pennsylvania, Lawrence dreamed about serving his country in the United States Navy. In 1979, he was accepted to the United States Naval Academy. After graduating in 1984, Lawrence served in the Navy for twenty years, rising to the position of Executive Officer of the USS Texas Battleship. Among his many deployments, Lawrence served in Kuwait, coordinating anti-submarine warfare during operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. Lawrence held the following positions in the United States Navy, Staff Oceanographer Officer, Executive Officer, Strike Warfare Missile Systems Officer, and Weapons Officer. He served on the USS Texas (Battleship); USS Kidd, (Destroyer); USS Cook FF-1083 (Frigate) and USS Thach FFG-43 (Frigate). Lawrence was awarded the following commendations during his years of service:

              The Navy Parachutist Badge

After leaving the military, Lawrence followed his passion for computers and earned a master's degree in Information Technology from George Washington University. Possessing a brilliant mind and a sharp wit, Lawrence loved to read, learn new things, and debate current events. Reserved by nature, Lawrence had a big heart and a love for his family. The greatest joy in Lawrence's life was his daughter Gizelle. After retiring from the military, Lawrence had more time to devote to Gizelle, eventually moving to California to be closer to her. His greatest hope was for Gizelle to have a happy life. He is survived by his daughter, Gizelle Antonia Marshall; his parents, Arnold James Marshall, Sr. and Patricia Ann Marshall; brother, Arnold James Marshall, Jr. and Taffye; sister, Pamela Marshall Trachtenberg and Richard; great aunts: Vera Hughes, Lola Piper, and Charlie Mae Daniels, nephew and nieces: Danielle Marshall; Samone Fontenot and Johari; Andre Marshall; and Michaelian Marshall Trachtenberg; along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and close friends.
