Obituary (VA): Walter Albert Schriefer '49

Commander Walter Schriefer, USN retired, of Virginia Beach, Virginia went to his eternal home on April 27, 2018. Walter was born July 22, 1925, in Chicago, son of Walter and Paula Schriefer. He lived life to glorify God! A sinner saved by grace.

He enlisted in the US Navy V5/V12 program in 1943. He completed the "90 day wonder school", followed by an appointment to the USNA. Upon graduation in 1949 he served briefly on the USS Kearsarge before reporting for flight training. He was designated a naval aviator in April 1951 and he married Ellen Ruth Montgomery of Corpus Christi, Texas on December 16, 1951. Tours of duty included Monterey; San Diego; Barbers Point; Midway; Lima, Peru; and Dam Neck, Final tour was XO of NAS Guantanamo Bay.

Following retirement, CDR. Schriefer taught math at Booker T. Washington, Norfolk and at the engineering department at TCC, Virginia Beach until 1990.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years. They were blessed with 5 sons and 2 daughters; Martin, Ruth (deceased in 1958), Walter, Janet, Frederick, Herbert, William, twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. Walter and Ruth enjoyed traveling the country to visit their children and many national parks.

Join us to celebrate Walt's life at Prince of Peace Lutheran 424 Kings Grant Rd, VB VA on Friday, May 11th at 6pm.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations made be made to St. Jude Children's @ STJUDE.ORG or Wycliffe Bible Translators @ WYCLIFFE.ORG . Burial will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery. Condolences may be offered to the family at: www.hollomon-brown.com
