Obituary (MD): Mrs. Ruth (Joseph Metcalf III '51)

Ruth Daniels Metcalf, a woman of great style, wit, kindness and zest for life passed away peacefully surrounded by family on April 9, 2018.

Mrs. Metcalf dedicated her life to service. As a board member to the Navy Relief Society, Naval Officer's Wives' Club, Enlisted Man's Wives' Club, Women's Club of Bangkok, Vinson Hall Sea Service Retirement Home, she gave her spirit. She was a past President of the Sponsor Society of the U.S. Navy, and she served the organization proudly for over 30 years. She was an active member of the Junior League of Washington, DC, Norfolk, VA and Honolulu, HI.

She was the beloved wife of the late Vice Admiral Joseph Metcalf, III, USN (Ret.); her marriage to Joseph Metcalf, III was an extraordinary and wonderful 56 years. From Ensign to Vice Admiral, she served as the supreme sailor's wife. Wrapping her arms around all the families under her husband's command, she steadily guided them.

She was the devoted mother of Dr. Joseph Metcalf, IV (wife, Kathleen), David Daniels Metcalf (wife, Toni), Elizabeth Metcalf Miller (husband, Patrick), and loving sister of Aaron M. Daniels (wife, Judy). Also left to cherish her memory are her 12 grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Her funeral service will be held at the United States Naval Academy Chapel, 121 Blake Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 on Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Naval Academy Cemetery.
