The Fund for Athletic Excellence

This initiative provides an annual stipend to the Academy so that the finest student-athletes in the nation can be drawn to the institution, excel in their chosen fields and develop into strong leaders.  The Fund for Athletic Excellence is used to meet a wide variety of needs, including team travel expenses for post-season competition; supplemental compensation and benefits for coaches; athletic recognition programs for varsity, club and intramural sports; Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS) athletic program expenses; and, occasionally, facility renovation and construction expenses.This stipend supplements Naval Academy Athletic Association revenues and the appropriated dollars that provide core funding for athletic programs. The Fund is administered by the Athletic & Scholarship Programs (A&SP) Division of the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation. The A&SP Division, founded in 1944 to provide financial assistance to the Naval Academy for athletic needs, is governed by a prestigious group of trustees chaired by RADM Thomas C. Lynch ’64 (USN, Ret.), former Superintendent of the Naval Academy.

Prep Program

The Foundation currently sponsors up to 50-60 candidates for one year of post-high school study at 15 civilian and 3 military preparatory schools. The schools include high school/prep schools, junior colleges, and a four-year university. It is up to the candidates, once accepted for sponsorship, to indicate which schools they would most like to attend for their prep year. Candidates recommended to the Foundation by USNA Admissions include men and women, athletes and non-athletes and students of varied ethnic backgrounds.

The Foundation sponsors an extensive awards program, which provides well-deserved recognition for Intramural Sports Teams, Club Sports Teams, Varsity Coaches and individual midshipmen.

Direct financial support from the Naval Academy Foundation for specific initiatives have included:

  • An awards program to recognize the four winning intramural teams in each of the three athletic seasons (fall, winter, spring) with trophies and plaques presented to winning team captains in King Hall (in front of the Brigade)
  • An awards program for Club Sports, which involve more than 500 midshipmen on 15 teams
  • An annual awards program to recognize the achievements of three varsity team coaches, one in each of the sports seasons
