Leslie Anne Steinberg-Strickland  (July 28, 1958 - February 9, 2012)

Leslie, 53 years old, died at the Westland House hospice care facility on February 9, 2012, with her family and friends by her side. A memorial service is planned at Monterey Church, on Alvarado Street in Monterey, California, at 11:00am on Saturday, February 18, 2012. Following this service there will be a Celebration of Life at Leslie s home in Carmel Valley, California. Leslie was born in Manhasset, New York, to Ben and Barbara Steinberg. The family lived in Great Neck, Long Island, New York, and later Leslie was raised in Huntington Station, New York. She graduated from Walt Whitman High School, and attended Suffolk County Community College. Leslie worked in several jobs, ending her New York career as purchasing manager at Jacknob Corporation, in Hauppauge, New York. Leslie moved to the Monterey area and worked as the purchasing manager of the Sheraton Hotel in Monterey. Leslie married Joseph Strickland on Valentine s Day, February 14, 1987 at the Church of the Oaks in Del Rey Oaks, California. Leslie and Joe moved to their new home in Carmel Valley in 1996. Leslie began her career with CTB/McGraw Hill in 1991 in the purchasing department, and rose to the position of purchasing manager. She eventually became the Program Manager for the state of Indiana. Leslie freely gave her time to help others. She was a volunteer helping the elderly and disabled with their doctor s appointments and shopping, and just being an ear to listen and a shoulder to lean on. She was on the board of directors for the Multiple Sclerosis Community Services Organization, serving as treasurer and secretary, and donating her time in fundraising events such as the Salinas Valley Rodeo; various races, concerts and events at Laguna Seca Raceway; golf tournaments at Corral De Tierra Country Club; and yearly rummage sales at the MSCS office parking lot in Salinas, California. Leslie was a founding member of the Monterey Chapter of the Project Management Institute, serving as treasurer, and studying and passing the PMI test to become an accredited Project Manager. Leslie belonged to, and loved Monterey Church, and she also was one of the most inquisitive and insightful members of a small weekly bible study group with her friends. Leslie is survived by her husband, Joseph Strickland; her mother, Barbara Steinberg; stepmother Helen Steinberg; brother, Keith Steinberg; sisters, Debra Steinberg Gnuse, Susan Steinberg Smith, and Michelle Monsen Steinberg Greenbaum; brother, David Steinberg; stepchildren, Lisa, Christian and Benjamin Strickland; nieces, Jessica, Stacy, Olivia and Hannah; nephews Matthew, Jordan, Eric, Zachary, Arthur and Ben. Donations may be made to the Hospice of the Monterey Peninsula, the Westland House Hospice and Rehabilitation Center in Monterey, or your local hospice.
