John V. "Jack" Reader, age 67, of Whitesboro, New York, formally of Hingham, Ma, passed away quietly in his home on Jan 11, 2020, after a long fight with cancer and cardiovascular issues. He was born February 16th, 1952, in Worcester, MA, a son of John K. "Jack" Reader and Anna C. Reader. He was the eldest of their three children. He grew up in Auburn, MA until the age of 12 then moved with his family to Edison, NJ where he attended Edison High School and graduated in 1970. He then attended the Naval Academy from 1970-1974 graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science. At the Naval Academy he played football for the varsity team his senior year, which he was very proud of, because his father also played varsity football in college. He served active duty in the U.S Navy from June of 1974 until August 1981. His military honors included a Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, a National Defense Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal, and an Expeditionary Medal. During his service he served on the USS Talbot as an Engineering officer. He also served as the First Lieutenant of the historic USS Constitution in Boston, Ma from July 1979-July 1981. After being honorably discharged from active duty in 1981, he then served in the U.S Navy Reserves from 1981 to 2004. He retired as a U.S Navy Commander. After finishing active duty Jack went back to school and received his master’s degree in Finance from Bentley University in Waltham, MA, where he graduated in 1982. In his civilian life, he worked as a facilities manager for several different companies and organizations over the course of a 30+ year career, mostly in and around the Boston Area. He finished his career at Utica College in Utica, NY where he was the Executive Director Facilities Management for the college from 2011-2016. Jack spent the majority of his adult life living in Boston, MA, where he lived from 1979-1996. He then moved to Hingham, MA, with his former spouse and two children, Grace E. Reader and George E. Reader for 17 years. In 2011, he moved to New Hartford, NY, then in 2016, he moved to his final home in Whitesboro, NY. Jack will be remembered for being a warm and loving father, an avid Boston sports fan, the loudest person at any gathering, his wonderful sense of humor, and most of all always putting others before himself. He enjoyed gardening, doing house projects, walks on the beach, watching his sports teams, going to the local Catholic Church on Sunday, and spending time with his children. John V. "Jack" Reader is survived by his daughter Grace Reader, his son George Reader, his sister Patricia Merlin and her husband Jim Merlin, and their children Emily and Sean Merlin, his brother Paul Reader and his wife Ellen Reader and their children Matthew and Hannah Reader, his cousin Rick Reid, his former spouse Mary Gilmartin Musumeci, and her family, his beloved dog Brandy, and many friends that loved him dearly. He is predeceased by his father John K. Reader and his mother Anna C. Reader. A Funeral Mass in his memory will be held at the Church of Our Lady of the Lourdes located at 2222 Genesee St. in Utica, NY. on Friday at 12pm. His final burial will be at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne, Ma. Arrangements are with the Friedel, Williams & Edmunds Funeral Home, 13 Oxford Rd., New Hartford.
