Colonel Theodore H. Shadburn ‘53, USAF, (Ret)

Ted H. Shadburn, 88, passed away on March 25, 2019 of natural causes at St. Jude Medical Center, Fullerton.

He was born and raised in Northeast Ohio and attended Cathedral Latin High School and John Carroll University, in Cleveland, OH, prior to receiving a congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy, and graduated with the Class of 1953 on June 5th 1953. He received his commission in the USAF. Soon after graduation he married Barbara Condon on July 11, 1953 in Painesville, OH.

After pilot training, he served with the 38th Bomb Wing at Laon AB, France where he flew the B-26 and B-57 Tactical Bombers (1954-1957). He attended the Air Force Institute of Technology at Wright-Patterson AFB (WPAFB) in Dayton, OH and received his graduate Engineering degree in June 1959. After serving in the Research and Development Command at WPAFB, he was transferred to Yokota Air Base, Japan and flew the C-130 in the 6091st Reconnaissance Squadron (1963-1965).

Ted served seven years as a Special Reconnaissance Staff Officer serving consecutively at Hq. PACAF in Hawaii, Hq. 7th Air Force in Saigon, Vietnam, and Hq. USAF in Washington DC. Upon leaving the Pentagon in July 1972, he served as Chief of the Materiel Services and Service Engineering Divisions in the Air Logistic Center at McClellan AFB, CA until February 1977. Appointed as Commander of the Special Logistic Squadron, at then Norton AFB in San Bernardino, CA, he was responsible for the total logistic support to the SR-71 spy plane. This provided him the opportunity to fly the SR-71 at greater than three times the speed of sound, the highlight of his military career.

While in the Air Force, he was qualified in nine different aircraft and served as both an Instrument and Flight Examiner while performing engineering and staff assignments.

Upon his military retirement, Ted joined the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation in Burbank, CA where he served as a Group Engineer, Configuration Manager and Division Manager on the F-117 stealth fighter program, in The Advanced Development Projects (1980-1991).

Ted is survived by his wife, Barbara; children: Jeffrey (Sharon), Mark (Lea), Craig (Margaret), Kathleen (Patrick) Butler and Shawn (Kristen); eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be 9:30 AM Friday, April 26, 2019 at St. Juliana Falconieri Catholic Church, Fullerton. Military burial will take place immediately following mass at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, CA.
