Obituary (PA): Mrs. Elizabeth (John L. Powell '51)

Posted on 01/22/2019

Elizabeth LePatourel Powell, 90, of West Marlborough Township, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2019 at the Chester County Hospital, with family by her side. Baz, as she was known by her friends, was born May 26, 1928, the only child of Frank and Miriam Flere Ogier LePatourel. Baz was a 1946 graduate of The George School but her heart always belonged to the Unionville Class of 1946 with whom she had spent the first eleven years of her schooling. She organized their annual reunion luncheon for the past several years. She graduated from Hood College in 1950. On December 27, 1950 she married John Lewis Powell. After working a few years for the Hercules Chemical Company she retired to start her family. In addition to her husband, Lew, Baz, is survived by sons, Jeremiah Ware Powell II (Wendy) and William Pusey Powell both of West Grove, and her daughter, Elizabeth Flere Bomba (Paul) of Strasburg, PA. She also is survived by her grandchildren, Courtney LeP. Powell, Kelsey Flere Bomba and Jared Benjamin Bomba. She was preceded in death by her parents and son, Frank LePatourel Powell. Baz was contagiously optimistic with an endlessly positive outlook on life. A dedicated volunteer, she was happy to do anything she was asked if it was doable. She was a very active life-long member of London Grove Friends Meeting where she served on numerous committees. She was also a life-long member of the Girl Scouts, where she had a positive impact on many girls as a leader. Over the course of many years she led a Senior troop, Brownies and then spent her longest tenure as a Junior troop leader. During her later years she was always so pleased to be greeted and remembered by her “girls”. She also was an active charter member of the Evergreens Garden Club during its half century existence. After the club disbanded she would organize luncheons for the group. Baz and Lew were founding members of a bridge club that gathered monthly for dinner and bridge for almost 70 years. Baz and Lew traveled the world together. She had an endless curiosity about the world and brought home a myriad of memories from each adventure. While she visited all seven continents, the tiny island of Guernsey held a special place in her heart as her parents had emigrated from there. She cherished her numerous relatives there and treasured her many visits especially those she shared with her grandchildren. Among her other interests were knitting and genealogy. Baz knit hundreds of sweaters and Christmas stockings, most of which she lovingly gave away. Her interest in people extended to generations past and present. She was a diligent genealogist who kept careful records of the Pusey and Powell families. For many years she and Lew would host a reunion of the descendants of Joseph and Elizabeth Pusey. Baz had a great love for her family, friends and all animals. She enjoyed following the activities of her grandchildren whether it was sports, theatre, Scouts or just daily life. She would often plan lunches with her friends so connections would remain strong. For over 65 years on Labor Day Weekend she organized and entertained her Hood College friends, their children, their grandchildren and lots of others who joined the fun along the way. A friend said that once you were a part of Baz’s world you were never forgotten. A service will be held at London Grove Friends Meeting on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 1PM. Interment will be private. Memorial contributions may be made to Canine Partners for Life PO Box 170 Cochranville, PA 19330, the Kennett Friends Home 147 W. State St. Kennett Sq., PA 19348 or the American Friends Service Committee.
