Obituary (OH): Earl Leroy Coen '47

Earl L. Coen  (May 31, 1924 - September 23, 2018)

Earl L. Coen, 94, of Massillon, passed away quietly on September 23, 2018 after a short period of declining health. Born May 31, 1924, to Earl D. and Pearl (Northrop) Coen, Earl grew up in St. Marys WV and was a proud graduate of the St. Marys High School class of 1942. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, MD in 1947, and upon completion of military service, moved to Canton Ohio beginning a 40 year career at the Coen Oil Company. He retired as vice-president and controller, and also served as president of the affiliated Pep Oil Company.

In 1951, he married Barbara Kern, and together they raised three daughters. After Barbara's death in 1982, Earl married Mildred "Mickey" Reynolds Doll who passed away in 2017.

Over the years Earl was active at the First Methodist Church of Massillon, St. John's United Church of Christ, and Central Presbyterian Church, sharing his financial expertise and serving on various boards

In 1990, he was elected to the Pleasants County Bank, St. Marys WV, board of directors, and served as chairman of the board for 26 years.

He is survived by his daughters, Kathy (Mark) Percival, Anita (Kevin) Coen, and Mary Ann (Richard) Lutz, two step-daughters, 12 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Earl especially enjoyed informal get-togethers with family and friends, road trips, Massillon Tiger football, and Kraus' pizza.

A true gentleman and role model, he was grateful for a long, productive life, and will be remembered for his thoughtfulness, generosity, and service to others.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Canton Regency for their love and support over the past eight years.

A celebration of life and dinner will be held at Central Presbyterian Church on Friday, September 28 at 11 a.m., preceded by one hour of visitation at the church.
