Steve assumed his current role of Executive Director of the Naval Submarine League in November, 2024. The Submarine League is a non-profit which supports our submarine force and conducts outreach to ensure the value of submarines to our national defense is more fully understood.
A career submarine officer, he served his junior officer tour on USS Grayling. Initially stationed in Charleston, SC, his assignment included a North Atlantic deployment and one year at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in an overhaul status. Following a tour as a Lead Instructor and Division Director at Naval Nuclear Power School, he returned to sea as Weapons Officer on USS Casimir Pulaski (Gold). Here, Steve completed four strategic deterrent patrols and achieved 100% uptime on a 29.5-year-old SSBN.
Steve served as Strategic Targeting and Command & Control Officer at U.S. Strategic Command CTF-144 (COMSUBLANT N94). He was key to the implementation of major targeting changes as the Cold War drew to a close. After a tour at COMSUBPAC, Steve was assigned to the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA), Travis Air Force Base Detachment. Serving in Director of Training and Executive Officer roles, he led missions as a Team Chief, escorting Russian Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START I) and Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) inspection teams to most sites in the United States. With 45 missions under his belt, Steve was the most experienced Team Chief in DTRA and served as Inspector on two missions in Russia, as well as a 6-week assignment at the U.S. Embassy in Almaty, Kazakhstan.
Steve retired from the Navy in 2003 after a 20-year career. He has since worked with several companies in the defense industry. His work supported OSD (Personnel & Readiness) for four years and Team Submarine at NAVSEA for over 13 years. His primary customers at NAVSEA were PMS 392 and PMS 404. He has served as the elected President of the USNA Class of 1983 since 2018. Steve also serves as a Director for the Dolphin Scholarship Foundation and on the Senior Advisory Council of the Accelerated Training in Defense Manufacturing Program.
Steve has been married to his wife Janean for over 35 years. They have three children including one adopted from Latvia. The couple enjoys attending Navy sporting and cultural events. Steve’s primary diversions are playing softball, reading and tending to his roses.
