Shipmate Submissions

Have a story to share? Email us ... but read this first:

Shipmate accepts contributions from writers and photographers interested in sharing their U.S. Naval Academy and U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation articles and images. First and foremost, any submission must be aligned with the Alumni Association’s mission:

To serve and support the United States, the Naval Service, the Naval Academy, and its Alumni: by furthering the highest standards at the Naval Academy; by seeking out, informing, encouraging, and assisting outstanding, qualified young men and women to pursue careers as officers in the Navy and Marine Corps through the Naval Academy; and by initiating and sponsoring activities which will perpetuate the history, traditions, memories, and growth of the Naval Academy and bind alumni together in support of the highest ideals of command, citizenship, and government.

Our readers are knowledgeable, enthusiastic participants in the Naval Academy, the Navy and Marine Corps, and Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation. Therefore, we require well-researched, well-crafted articles of interest for this community. All article submissions should include photographs or illustrations, or information about where Shipmate may locate supporting photography/artwork.

All articles must be original works, and we give first preference to authors and the works for which we receive first-time publishing rights. Please do not submit works that have been simultaneously submitted to other publications.

The Alumni Association and Foundation has a number of communications tools in which solicited and unsolicited articles may be used including Shipmate magazine and our website. Because of the different media, requirements for submission vary. The Alumni Association and Foundation reserves the right to edit for style, format, and content in addition to determining the best vehicle, if any, for the article.

Submission Guidelines:

• Length: 1,500 words maximum

• Photographs/Artwork: Photos must be accompanied by a photo credit and caption as well as contact information of any individuals appearing in the photograph for publication purposes. Color or black & white photos are acceptable in high-resolution formats (at least 300 dpi at 3 x 5”).

• Articles must be complete and original works submitted electronically via email.

• Articles may not include politics, obscenities, or religion and will be edited and published at the discretion of the publisher.

• Shipmate does not review books or publish excerpts of books.
