CAPT Kevin Stone '76, USNR (Ret.)

Kevin Stone, son of CDR Jim Stone ’52, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Naval Architecture. He entered the naval nuclear power program and served aboard the USS HAMMERHEAD (SSN 663). After leaving active duty in 1981 he joined the Naval Reserve and subsequently held assignments with the USS L.Y. SPEAR (AS-36), COMSUBLANT, OPNAV, and COMSUBEASTLANT. He retired in 1997 after serving as Commanding Officer of a reserve unit supporting Naval Weapon Station Earle.

His civilian career has primarily been in naval architecture. He has worked in the US and internationally on the design and repair of naval and commercial vessels, specializing in advanced ship structural design, evaluation, and optimization. In addition to his naval architecture career, he has also served as Vice President of Business Development for QinetiQ Ltd., a British defense R&D company, and as a strategic communications adviser to the Chief of Naval Research. He is currently an independent naval architect and owner of Stone Naval Consulting LLC. He earned a Master of Engineering Administration degree from George Washington University and is a Professional Engineer in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering.

Kevin lives in Arnold, Maryland with his wife, Barbara. They are both active members of the Catholic community at the Naval Academy Chapel and can be frequently found on the Magothy River with their family on their boat “Dolce”. He is a life member of the Alumni Association and has been President of the Great Bicentennial Class of 1976 since 2001.
