Captain Vernazza is a native of Connecticut and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland, in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics. She is a certified Senior Professional Human Resource (SPHR) Officer with an Executive Masters Degree in Business Administration and a Masters Degree in Public Administration. She is a graduate of the Harvard Business School Advanced Management Program, Joint Forces Staff College, and Naval War College.
Her initial assignments in the Fleet Support Community included serving as a Mathematics Instructor & Athletic Coach at the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Newport, RI; Operations & Training Officer at Naval Base Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; and Flag Aide to Commander Naval Base Pearl Harbor and Commander Naval Surface Group Middle Pacific, Hawaii. As a Human Resource Officer, Captain Vernazza served in the Manpower and Personnel (N1) Directorate of Commander Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet in San Diego, California, and Congressional Liaison Officer and Deputy Director of Community Relations for Commander, U.S. Atlantic Fleet, in Norfolk, Virginia prior to assuming duties as Chief of Protocol to Commander, U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
Her senior leadership assignments have included Officer-in-Charge, Personnel Support Activity Detachment Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia; Training Director at Naval Network Warfare Command in Little Creek, Virginia; Chief of Naval Operations Protocol Director and Chief of Protocol for the Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. She successfully completed her command tour as the 7th Battalion Commander of the United States Military Entrance Processing Command and Commander of the San Diego Military Entrance Processing Station as well as her post Major Milestone tour as the Director of Total Force Management at Navy Region Southwest, headquartered in San Diego, California.
CAPT Vernazza is currently stationed at the Washington Navy Yard in DC and was recently selected as an MIT Seminar XXI Fellow. Her military awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, five Meritorious Service Medals, Joint Service Commendation Medal, three Navy Commendation Medals, Joint Service Achievement Medal, two Navy Achievement Medals with various campaign and unit awards.
