Obituary (MA): Joseph Michael Lombardo '51

Joseph M. Lombardo, 92, of Pocasset, MA died peacefully at home on Friday, February 28, 2020. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Patricia C. Lombardo of Pocasset, his children Mark J. Lombardo and his wife Sharon of Carlsbad, CA and Pocasset, John C. Lombardo and his wife Stacy of Napa, CA,, Charles J. Lombardo and his wife Sharan of Mansfield, TX, his sister Mary Ann Nespoli and her husband Paul of Ocean City, NJ, and his grandchildren Megan, Joseph, Miles, and Cole, and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Michael and Anna (Caruso) Lombardo of Drexel Hill, PA, and his brother James Lombardo and his wife Catherine (Adams) Lombardo of Damascus, MD. Joe was born on October 2, 1927 in Philadelphia, PA to Michael J. and Anna C. Lombardo. He graduated from West Philadelphia Catholic High School in 1945 and immediately began college at Villanova University. Joe joined the U.S. Navy during the final days of World War II and attended the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. He graduated from Cornell University in 1952 with a degree in Electrical Engineering. Joe was president of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and active in the Newman Club at Cornell. He married Patricia H. Collins in Philadelphia on October 22, 1955. After working many years for the Honeywell Information Systems in the Philadelphia area, he moved to Needham, MA in 1965 and began working for Foxboro Computing. Over ten years, the couple welcomed three children into their home and Joe enjoyed teaching the boys boating skills and sports. In 1967, he purchased a summer home in the Tahanto Colony in Pocasset, MA that provided the family with a place to relax and enjoy boating and the water. As the family moved around the country, the cottage in Pocasset was always their home base. This house became the couple's retirement home where they enjoyed welcoming family, friends, and neighbors. Joe was accomplished in the growing computer science industry. After leaving Foxboro, he started working for Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) where he thrived for over 25 years through to his retirement. His position at DEC brought him back to Philadelphia from 1973 to 1984, but he never lost his love for Pocasset and faithfully returned every summer. In 1984, he moved back to Acton, MA where he stayed until retirement. Joe had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed boating, golf and playing bridge. Joe enjoyed jazz and Big Band music. He was active in the Tahanto Association, as well as the Cornell Alumni Association and the Cornell Club of Cape Cod. He had a passion for the sea and enjoyed racing Beetle Cat sailboats in the 1970's with the Tahanto Yacht Club. He was an active traveler after retirement and visited fifty-one countries around the world with his wife Patti. Visiting hours will be held from 4-6 PM on Sunday March 22 at Chapman, Cole, & Gleason in West Falmouth. A funeral mass will take place Monday March 23 at 10:00 AM at St. John of the Evangelist Church in Pocasset, with internment to follow at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne at 11:30 AM, with a reception to follow at the Mezza Luna in Buzzards Bay. Father Tom Frechette will officiate the ceremony. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Joe's life.
