Obituary (GA): Ernest Collis Fischer '62

Commander Ernest Collis Fischer

Commander Ernest Collis Fischer, loving husband, father, seaman, and engineer passed away peacefully at 79 on December 30th, 2019. Ernest was born in Texas in 1940, the son of a British immigrant and newspaper reporter. He spent his younger years in New Orleans, Switzerland and the family farm in Bartlett Texas. In 1958, he was admitted to the U.S. Naval Academy and graduated with honors. Ernest proceeded to submarine school where he met his wife of 56 years, Kathleen. Ernest served with distinction in the U.S. Navy on several nuclear submarines and culminated his career as captain of the nuclear-powered ballistic missiles sub- marine the Henry Clay. In addition to his service on multiple submarines, Ernest earned his parachutist wings, became a scuba diving instructor, got his pilot's license, and obtained a master's degree in business while in the Navy. He retired with honors from the military after serving 20 years including deployment during Vietnam. After retirement Ernest moved his family north to Minnesota to join Honeywell's underseas systems division. His career as an engineer based out of Minneapolis also included roles as chief engineer of marine systems, executive vice president of a clean water company, and CEO of a start-up focusing on cryptic key cryptography. In retirement, Ernest volunteered in his community as a member of the Edina School Board and pro bono tax consultant. In his spare time, he enjoyed sailing his boat and hosting family events in Savannah, Georgia where he and Kathleen resided part time. He is preceded in death by his sister Genevieve and his son Bradley. He will be missed greatly by his wife, two daughters, five grandchildren. Fair winds & following seas, Ernie. A memorial will take place on January 31st at the Fort Snelling Chapel, 1 Tower Ave, Minneapolis MN 55450. Visitation will be 11-11:30 am followed by a service at 11:30 am. A celebration of Ernie's life will be held after the memorial at Cov Restaurant in Edina, 1:30-3:30pm.
