Obituary (GA): Dwight Edly Brown '59

Dwight Edly Brown  (November 5, 1936 - December 18, 2019)

Dwight Edly Brown, of Marietta, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, December 18th, 2019. Born November 5th, 1936 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, he was the son of Tyler Vandiver Brown, Jr. and Dolly Victoria King Brown. He was married to Sara Prosterman Brown, who has predeceased him, for just shy of 54 years. He is survived by his daughter Cindy Goldberg and husband Jeff Goldberg, of Acworth, Georgia; two sons, Scott Brown and his wife Robin Brown of Powatan, Virginia; Randy Brown and his wife Kelly Brown of Dallas, Georgia. Dwight has seven grandchildren including Kristen and Justin Goldberg, Amelia and Ashley Brown, Lindsey and Gillian, and the late Douglas Brown. Dwight is preceded in death by his siblings Mildred Caldwell, Milton Brown, Dean Brown, Betty Moss, and Martha Birtles.

Dwight was a Class of 1959 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, attaining a degree in Electrical Engineering. Serving nearly six years after graduation in the United States Marine Corps with posts around the country and in Okinawa, Japan, before his discharge as a Captain. Continuing his education, he earned a M.B.A. from Georgia State University in 1966. After his service, he worked with a few companies before settling into a lengthy career, including as Regional Asbestos Coordinator, with the Environmental Protection Agency. Dwight ended his career by founding his own consulting company, AHP Research, Inc., developing asbestos hazards training programs and supporting data bases for building owners.

In addition to his work history, Dwight was an early adopter and enthusiast of Apple designed technology as well as an active parent and mentor to children and young adults; coaching little league baseball, founding and coaching the East Side Track and Cross Country Club, serving as a Naval Academy Blue & Gold Officer, and as President of the Georgia USNA Parents Association.

The Memorial Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2019 at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park, 1861 Dallas Highway SW, Marietta, Georgia with beloved family member and pastor Del Parris, officiating. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in honor of Dwight Brown, grandfather of Douglas Brown, to Dan's House of Hope, Inc, P.O. Box 8444, Houston, TX 77288-8444, www.danshouseofhope.org. Dan's House of Hope offers families a place to stay while adolescents and young adults receive treatment for cancer.

In addition to his love for his family and given his tremendous spirit in all things related to the Naval Academy, we know he would want to leave with the following words:
