JOSEPH ROBERT WINSLOW, JR  (May 29, 1922 - November 20, 2019)

Joseph Robert Winslow, Jr., a veteran of the Second World War, died peacefully at The Lynmoore at Lawnwood Assisted Living home in Fort Pierce, Florida on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. He was 97 years old. Joseph is survived by his devoted wife Maria, five children and three stepchildren, and their spouses. In addition to his children, Joseph is survived by nine loving grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, ten beloved great grandchildren, his sister, and many nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents and brother.

Joseph was born on May 29, 1922 in Chowan County, North Carolina. He grew up on his family’s farm in Robersonville, North Carolina, leaving as a young man to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland with the class of 1946. Graduating a year early to fight in the war, he joined the United States Navy in 1945 as a Minesweeping Officer aboard the U.S.S. YMS-426. During the Korean War, Joseph was an instructor within the Naval Academy Seamanship and Navigation Department, teaching, among other subjects, celestial navigation. He was honorably discharged in 1959.

His Navy achievements notwithstanding, Joseph enjoyed a successful career as a real estate and land investment entrepreneur in Virginia until he retired in his late 70s. Joseph, known affectionately as Grandpa Joe, was a devoted husband and father and loving grandfather and great grandfather. He was an avid reader and lifelong outdoorsman, deriving great pleasure from reading countless books and from hunting, fishing, and gardening.

Joseph was loved by his family and those who knew him; he will be missed for his vitality and generosity of spirit and love.

Should friends desire, memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, in lieu of flowers.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 26 from 1:00 to 2:00 PM, with prayer service at 2:00 PM, at Strunk Funeral Home, Vero Beach. A memorial service and celebration of Joseph’s life will be planned for a later date.
