Obituary (WA): John Stanley Boyd '56

John Stanley Boyd January 10, 1931 September 15, 2019 John is survived by his two children; son Kurt Boyd (Lisa) and daughter Michelle Guches (Dennis), four grandchildren, Marissa Guches, Matthew Boyd (Ashley), Lexi Guches and Jessica Boyd, and two great grandchildren, Meira and Isaiah Boyd. John is survived by his second wife, Margaret (Potwin) Boyd and her family, and preceded in death by his first wife, Maria (Boyd) Grahn. In Chicago, Illinois in 1931, he was reared in Chicago and New York City, attending several prep schools throughout the mid-west and east coast, and Purdue University at the age of 16. John enlisted in the US Navy in March of 1951, and later received a US Naval Fleet appointment to the United States Naval Academy ( USNA) in 1953. In June of 1956 upon graduation, he received his commission as a Supply Corps Officer, and reported to Athens, GA for Supply School for his first assignment. Throughout his 12+ year career, he served at various duty stations in the United States, Italy and at sea. He left military service to move into the private sector. In the Summer of 1967, he moved his family of four from their Virginia home, west to Medford, Oregon, where his mother, the late Claire Vernon & Frank Rider, resided in retirement. John moved back to public service in the early 1970's, retiring in 1995 as the Human Resources Director at the Veterans Administration Rehabilitation Center & Clinics, located in White City, OR. He remained at his Rogue Valley Country Club residence until the Fall of 2018, when he relocated to Mercer Island, WA to live out the remainder of his life. John was a wonderful storyteller, a conversationalist known for his opinionated banter, the love of golf, and beloved sports teams; the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Bears. His memorial service will take place at Covenant Shores Retirement Community Lodge, 9107 Fortuna Drive, Mercer Island, WA 98040 on November 10th, 2019. He will be honored for his service and laid to rest at the Eagle Point National Cemetery in Eagle Point, OR. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to www.KingdomHome.org.
