Obituary (VA): Michael Louis Sorrentino '52

Michael L. Sorrentino  (August 3, 1929 - July 27, 2019)

Passed away peacefully on July 27, 2019 at his home in Fairfax Station, VA, one week shy of his 90th birthday. Born August 3, 1929 in Sharon Hill PA to the late Louis Michael and Elvira Sorrentino; preceded in death by 2 siblings: Louis Angelo Sorrentino and Carol Ann Mazzola. Mike was a small-town football hero at Sharon Hill High School, Class of 1948; attended Bullis Prep prior to his acceptance at The United States Naval Academy; was a proud member of USNA Class of ’52 “Tough Shoes to Fill”. Upon graduation from the Academy, he reported to Biloxi MI, where he started his 27-year military career in the United States Air Force. He retired at the rank of Colonel on December 31, 1979. The highlight of his civilian career was in 1987, when he and 2 partners started Overlook Systems Technologies, Inc, an engineering firm specializing in all aspects of the Global Positioning System (GPS) and Positioning, Navigation and Timing (PNT) technologies, where he remained President & CEO until his retirement in 2010.

He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Ruth Linda Sorrentino; his 2 children and their spouses: Michael Stephen & Donna Sorrentino and Christine (Tina) & Kent Hyatt; and 2 grandchildren: Dylan Michael Hyatt and Melissa Taylor Hyatt.

He will be remembered by all as a loving husband, father, PopPop, co-worker, and friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his name to The Parkinson’s Foundation.
