A celebration of life of Charles Thomas Maples, Jr., 78, will be held Saturday, June 29, at the Decatur First Presbyterian Church, 701 Oak Street. Visitation begins at 9:30 a.m., a memorial service at 10:30. Charles died at his home on May 30. Charles was born in Fairfield, Ala. to his mother Alfie and father Charles T. Maples, Sr. After attending the Naval Academy, Charles earned a Master of Arts from Samford University and a Ph.D. in History from the University of Alabama. He served as Dean of Students at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Later, he became an independent businessman and college history teacher. Charles was a Scoutmaster, a genealogist, a nature lover and a friend to animals. He is survived by his wife Roselyn, his son Tom, his daughter Claire Maples Edwards and her two children, and his sister Dorothy Woodsides of Sandy Springs, Ga. In lieu of flowers, Charles would be honored by a donation to First Presbyterian Church Decatur, in his name.
