Obituary (VA): William Markey Georgen '47

William Markey Georgen  (DECEMBER 25, 1923 – APRIL 26, 2019)

CDR William Markey Georgen (Bill), U.S. Navy retired, 95, died on Friday, April 26, 2019 at his home in Annandale, Virginia. Born in New York City in 1923, Bill was one of two sons of Clarence Belden and Maud Josephine Markey Georgen. Early in childhood, the family moved to Glen Rock, NJ. After graduating from Ridgewood High School, he received an appointment to the U. S. Naval Academy and graduated in 1946 (war-shortened Class of 1947). After graduation, he embarked on a Naval career that included tours in Honolulu HI, Newport RI (two tours), Monterey CA, Annapolis MD, Key West FL, Charleston SC (two tours), and Washington, D.C. He served in engineering, gunnery, communications, personnel, operations, minesweeping, and command billets, and as an instructor at the U. S. Naval Academy. He attended the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey CA where he studied operations research and engineering. During his second tour in Charleston, he was Commodore of Mine Sweeper Division 84. In Washington, D.C., he was Head of the Special Studies Section, Strategic Systems Project Office. Following his retirement from Naval service, Bill used his military and engineering experience working with several companies in the Washington D.C. area. After his second retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family and working on house and garden projects. Up until recently, he actively maintained connections with his relatives, former shipmates and acquaintances. He also did significant genealogical research in discovering and compiling information about the Georgen family tree, including taking trips to Canada, Ireland and Germany to investigate the heritage of the Georgen family. Bill is survived by his wife of 72 years, Elizabeth Pleines Georgen (Tish); four sons and their wives, Bob and Beth Georgen of Charleston SC, Tom and Pam Georgen of Falls Church VA, Dick and Carolyn Georgen of Round Hill VA, and Bill and Kathy Georgen of Vienna VA; grandchildren, Robert (Suzanne) Georgen, Sarah Georgen, Jennifer Georgen (Eddie Roggenstein), David (Christina) Georgen, Michael (Sarah) Georgen, Katie (Robert) Carpenter and Matthew Georgen; seven great grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and their families. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Stephen Matthew Georgen, and by his brother, Robert Dwyer Georgen, a World War II Army veteran who fought in the European theater. The funeral with full military honors will be held at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, September 30, 2019 at 11:00 AM. The visitation will be at Murphy Funeral Homes, 1102 West Broad Street, Falls Church VA, on Sunday, September 29, 2019 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
