Henry Schultz  (February 5, 1922 – May 14, 2019)

Lieutenant Commander "Hank" Schultz, USN (Ret.), passed away on 14 May 2019 at Anne Arundel Medical Center in Annapolis, MD. He was 97 years old. Hank was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred F. Schultz of Flora, IL. He attended Flora Grammar School and graduated from Flora High School in 1939. Hank received his appointment to the Naval Academy in 1941 from the Secretary of the Navy while serving as a seaman on the battleship MARYLAND stationed at Pearl Harbor. Upon graduation, he served aboard the light cruiser MONTPELIER in Japanese waters and as the commanding officer of a landing ship while awaiting orders to fight training at Pensacola. Hank received his naval aviator's Wings of Gold in 1949. He served in various multi-engine squadrons in French Morocco, Italy and on the East Coast. He retired in 1965 and reported directly to NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center. After eight months training, he was appointed as director of the NASA Texas Tracking and Data Acquisition Station, one of 16 such stations around the world. After three years as Texas STADIR, he was appointed as NASA representative in Spain and concurrently NASA director of the Madrid Space Station and NASA Chief of Agency, U.S. Embassy, Spain. He received the NASA Exceptional Service Medal while in Spain. After 10.5 years in Spain, he returned to the USA and retired with 40 years government service at 58 years of age. Subsequently, he spent a short tour of 1.5 years as a consultant for Frederick Electronics in Spain, Egypt and Portugal, living in Madrid and commuting to Egypt and Portugal routinely. Hank often remarked that his other life style was interesting, exciting and sometimes intriguing. His joy was sailing, motor boating and skiing with his children. His wife, the former Irene B. Stager of Johnstown, PA, a Navy nurse, LT, USNR, passed away in 2005. Their three children, Susan M. Oravetz, Frederick V. Schultz and Teresa M. Canon; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren survive him. He will be inurned with his wife in the Naval Academy Columbarium in a dual ashes urn, engraved with each of their favorite verses.
