Obituary (GA): Mrs. Gertrude (Willard G. Viers Jr. '53)

Posted on 02/25/2019

"Dixie" (Gertrude) Fay Viers passed away peacefully at her home in Savannah, Ga., on the morning of Sunday, Feb. 10, 2019. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dixie married her high school sweetheart, the late Lt. Col. Willard G. ("Gus") Viers upon his graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1953 and commissioning as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps. The Corps became a career for both of them, having lived at various military bases across the county until they retired to Savannah in 1976. Dixie lost her beloved Gus in 2005. Daughter of the late Walter D. Fay, Sr., and Gertrude Corish Fay of Signal Mountain, Tenn., Dixie was born in Stamford, Connecticut on March 15, 1932. Dixie was given her nickname to leave no doubt as to her southern roots-a fact that was clear to all who enjoyed her company and humor. In addition to Signal Mountain and Chattanooga, Dixie spent much of her youth in the Atlanta area, graduating from Christ the King High School, before attending the University of Chattanooga (now UT-Chattanooga). Dixie is survived by her two sons and their families: W. Glenn Viers and his wife Susan (nee' Niemann) of Atlanta, and their daughters Elizabeth Rodger and Alexandra Viers (a grandson Holden predeceased her last April) and great-grandson James Rodger; and Michael E. Viers and his wife Marci (nee' Erickson), and their daughter Taylor Viers and son Michael M. ("Mac") Viers. Dixie's brother W. Donald Fay, Jr., passed away in 2018. In addition to her sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren, Dixie is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, god children, other relatives, and many friends. Dixie was an active member of Blessed Sacrament Church in Savannah and a volunteer to many worthwhile organizations, including the St. Joseph's/Candler Hospital Auxiliary and the Savannah Airport Commission where she and her dear friend Beanie Barbee regularly greeted tourists arriving at the Savannah airport with warm smiles and southern graciousness. Dixie was immensely proud of her family, and leaves behind beautiful memories and many pearls of wisdom, which she unselfishly dispensed regularly to all. An avid football fan, Dixie regularly hosted "pre-game" parties for the Savannah Quarterback Club whose members will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive visitors beginning at 9 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 18, 2019, at Blessed Sacrament Church in Savannah, to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be private at the National Cemetery in Beaufort, South Carolina where she will join Gus for the remainder of eternity. The family will also receive family and friends at her residence at Noon after the Funeral Mass on Monday, Feb. 18. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that any remembrances be given to The Savannah Quarterback Club Scholarship Fund. Dixie took great pride in The Club and its good work supporting local student athletes. Please direct these to The Savannah Quarterback Club Scholarship Fund c/o The Savannah Community Foundation, 2225 Norwood Avenue, Savannah, GA 31406. Fox & Weeks Funeral Directors, Savannah, Ga.
