Obituary (NJ): Jeremiah Vincent Tierney '60

Jeremiah "Jerry" Tierney passed away on Friday February 15, 2019 at the age of 82. He was born and raised in Shenandoah, Pennsylvania where he completed his elementary and high school educations. He graduated from Shenandoah Catholic High School in 1954, where he starred on the basketball team. He completed 3 semesters of Civil Engineering at Villanova University before being granted a congressional appointment to attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, graduating in 1960. After 2 years in the Navy, Jerry held positions as a computer programmer and systems analyst for various firms, also consulting as a private contractor. He went on to create Microbyte Computer Services, which offered a variety of computer sales and services, including a computer learning center. Getting his teaching certificate after the closing of MCS enabled him to teach computer and math classes in the Cranford and Garwood school systems. Jerry also taught Continuing Education classes at Union County College as well as at the Union County Police Academy and Kean University. Jerry is survived by his wife Rosemarie (Noto) Tierney, and two sons, Jerry (fiance Valerie Vega) and Jeffrey (wife Kathleen Snyder Tierney), and his three precious granddaughters Caroline, Annie and Elizabeth. He is also survived by three siblings, Louise Radak, Thomas Tierney, and Maureen Orbock (husband Jacob), and two sisters-in-law Bessie Nelson and Vita Zoltak. Jerry was predeceased by his brother John Tierney. Jerry was a loving, caring, magnificent husband, father and "Pa" who was married to Rosemarie for 47 years. He was an avid sports fan who closely followed Navy Football, turning the Army / Navy game into an annual family holiday. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family, immediate and extended. A Life Celebration will be on Tuesday from 4 to 8 pm at Gray Memorial Funeral Home in Cranford. Funeral services to be 10 am Wednesday at the funeral home with burial at Fairview Cemetery in Westfield. You may go to grayfuneralhomes.com for on line condolences.
