Obituary (WY): Mrs. Margaret (Francis E. Field '46)

Posted on 02/12/2019

Margaret Jane (Peggy) O’Bryan Field  (November 14, 1922 - February 4, 2019)

Peggy Field died February 4, 2019, three months after her 96th birthday, at Westward Heights Care Center in Lander, WY where she lived for one month after suffering from minor strokes which disabled her and started her downward decline. She was born in Odessa, Missouri on Nov. 14, 1922 to Henry Eugene O'Bryan Sr. from Pursley, Texas and Susie Gertrude Weaver from Brownsville, Tennessee, who also had a son, Henry Jr., and daughter, Eugenia.

During her childhood, her parents moved to Utah and then later settled in Clay Center, Kansas, where she graduated high school. Peggy attended Huff Business College, in Kansas City, and then worked for an oil company which brought her to Lander, where she met her late husband Francis Edward (Ed) Field in 1943. He was home on leave from the Naval Academy and they were introduced by a mutual friend. Ed was the son of Persis Belle St. John and Jesse Harold Field (whose family settled in Lander Valley in 1886) and grew up in Lander, graduating HS in 1941.

Two years later, after Ed graduated from the Naval Academy, they married on October 13, 1945 in Annapolis, MD. They went on to live a military life and were stationed on both U.S. coasts, as well as overseas. She was a very supportive Navy wife and created a positive life for her family at each posting; she was an adventurer and nomad at heart.

Besides her family, she loved travel, calligraphy, and genealogy. She became a professional genealogist and wrote a family history, tracing relatives back to the Mayflower and Jamestown, and was accepted into the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. During her profession as a genealogist in Washington, DC, she was a member and employee of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), as a staff genealogist and head of their Supplementals department. She also served as a Staff Genealogist for the National Society of the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century.

In 1994, Peggy and Ed retired and moved to Lander permanently. While in Lander, she was a member of the POE Chapter 2, beginning in 2011 and was an active member serving on their Membership committee and supported all their scholarship activities. She also became a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Olivet Chapter No. 3 of Lander. In addition, she documented and published the Methodist Church’s history in Lander, titled One Hundred Twenty Five Years of Methodism in Lander Valley, copyrighted in 2009. Copies are available at the Methodist Church office.

Peggy was a woman of strong values and faith, had a loving heart, always supportive and gentle, and a believer that things always worked out for the best. She left us knowing she had a full and rich life and with the wish we celebrate as we move on after her death. Her signature motto was “In God We Trust.”

She is survived by her three children, Gregory Field of Annapolis, MD, Christopher Field of McLean, VA, and Sheridan Kalletta of Colorado Springs, CO, and grandchildren Lindsey Frazer of Landenberg, PA, Jeffrey Field of Springfield, PA, Casey Field of Morgantown, WV, Alexis Kalletta of Tempe, AZ, Nicole Kalletta of Colorado Springs, CO, Ted Garber of Leesburg, VA, Kennedy Garber of Bel Air, MD, along with nine great grandchildren.

A service for her and her late husband, Francis Edward Field who passed in 2013, will be held this spring or summer on the east coast where they will be placed together to rest.
