Commander Anton (Butch, Chuck, or Crash) Charles Hansmann USNR (retired), age 93, of Rockville, MD passed away on Jan. 24, 2019. He is survived by his daughter Kristin. He was predeceased by his wife Patricia (Patty), sons Anton, Jr. and Peter, and dear friend Elsie Sommer. Anton was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1925 to Adriana and Anton Christopher Hansmann and raised in Jackson Heights, NY. Anton graduated from Townsend Harris High School in Manhattan and later received an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. He entered the USNA Class of 1946 graduating on an accelerated war-driven schedule on June 6, 1945. This is where he received his nickname 'Butch' after famed WWII naval aviator Butch O'Hare. Following graduation, Butch was assigned to the USS Nicholas on a cruise destined for the WWII Victory Occupation in Japan. The Navy sent him for further education at MIT where he received degrees in electrical engineering and naval architecture and more training at the the Naval School of Salvage. While at MIT, he met his future wife at a Commander Hotel dance at Harvard Square. Butch and Patty married in 1948 raising three children and relocating to Rockville, MD in 1959. After his honorable discharge from active duty in 1958, he became a Naval reservist. As a civilian, he specialized in Naval ship missile systems at Vitro and later worked at Raytheon, Research, Analysis, and Management (RAM) and JJ McMullen. Butch was active in the Boy Scouts at St. Jude's Catholic Church with his sons and had many other interests and hobbies. He was a licensed HAM radio operator (K3NBO) since his youth. He was an avid reader and had a love of electronics, sailing, gadgets, astronomy, computers, history, politics, and flying. After obtaining his private pilot's license in his early 50's, 'Crash' joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary for several years. He also served as President of the Montgomery County Airpark users group in the late 1980's. He and Patty enjoyed spending time at their small farm in West Virginia and their cottage on the South River purchased to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary in 1973. Patty passed away in 1989. In his later years, Chuck enjoyed traveling in the US and abroad with his friend Elsie, spending time at his cottage on the South River and watching golf on TV, especially Tiger Woods. Always proud of his time at the Naval Academy, he was still actively serving as the USNA Class of '46 secretary at the time of his death. Inurnment will occur at the United States Naval Academy Columbarium at a date to be arranged.
