Obituary (NJ): John Paul Gaffigan '48

John Paul Gaffigan  (December 05, 1924 - January 27, 2019)

John Paul Gaffigan LTJG USNA 48; Professor Emeritus, Drexel University

Mr. Gaffigan was born 1924 in Philadelphia, Pa.  Youngest child to William & Margaret (née Fitzmaurice) Gaffigan, of Co. Mayo, Ireland.  Beloved husband to his wife Mary Ellen (née Ransom), devoted father to his children John Paul Gaffigan Jr. and Theresa (Gaffigan) Franken. 

Mr. Gaffigan died peacefully, January 27, 2019.  He & his late wife resided their remaining years at their Daughter & Son-in-Law’s home in Medford Lakes, NJ surrounded by two loving granddaughters. 

Mr. Gaffigan attended Saint Joes Prep High School and graduated from The United States Naval Academy in 1948.  He was employed as The Director of The Philadelphia Port Authority in the 70’s and early 80’s.  He took early retirement and went to Consult for Joseph P. Callahan Structural Engineer Company.  His later years he kept himself busy with many a trip to Switzerland supporting a dear friend with business ventures. 

Mr. Gaffigan was a compassionate charitable man.  He is remembered for his hard honest work ethic and dedication to his family. Mr. Gaffigan’s honorable life earned him the invitation to become a Knights of Malta, Washington DC Chapter.

Mr. Gaffigan and his wife resided in Cherry Hill, NJ while raising their two children.  Mr. Gaffigan was active in his parish, St. Thomas Moore & his summer home parish in Ocean City, NJ, Our Lady of Good Council.

Mr. Gaffigan will be laid to rest along with his wife at a private celebration in Annapolis, Md. at The United States Naval Academy.

Devoted father of John Paul (Mariah) Gaffigan,  Theresa Ann (J. Marc) Franken, Loving Grandfather of John & Brenna Gaffigan, Olivia & Amelia Franken. 

In lieu of flowers all donations can be made to The Little Sisters of the Poor, 5300 Chester Ave., Philadelphia PA, 19143.
