Carol Marie Davis Holt  (October 13, 1922 November 1, 2018)

Carol Marie “KK” Davis Holt met her Mac in heaven on November 1, 2018. KK was born in Birmingham, Ala. on Oct. 13, 1922. She grew up with just her mom until she met her husband to be (Mac) at the United States Naval Academy in 1942. Then a wonderful, big loving family opened up to her. Mac graduated from USNA on June 9, 1943 and they married in Staunton, Va. on June 10, the next day. KK was the perfect naval officer's wife. She loved to entertain, to meet new friends, and play golf. She loved their many years on the golf course at Army Navy CC. When Mac was a pilot in the Berlin Airlift, KK spent her time caring for their two children, sewing, knitting socks for Mac, and saving all Mac's letters, and hers, they wrote while he was away. In addition, she was an accomplished artist, loved the challenges of French cooking, knitted beautiful sweaters for her grandchildren. Most importantly she was deeply involved with her churches. Twenty years ago Mac and KK left their grand life in Arlington, Va. to be with their daughter Carol. They joined Carol's church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Salem. She was a longtime member of Guild II, a shepherd, Bible study, Bible School, and more. Although St. Paul's had Bread Sunday once a month, as her dementia worsened, she thought it was every Sunday. So every single Sunday, she brought 10 loaves of bread. I know the Salem Food Pantry is missing her! KK was preceded in death by her husband, McHenry Holliday Holt and her son, McHenry Holliday Holt Jr. She is survived by her daughter, Carol Groves; three grandsons, Eric, Scott (Beth), and Jon Groves; granddaughter, Jaelea Holt; and great-granddaughter, Delaney Anne Groves. Also a host of wonderful nieces, nephews, and God-children. A celebration of KK's life will be held at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 11 a.m. Monday, November 26, 2018, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Burial will be at Thornrose Cemetery in Staunton, Va. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salem Food Pantry.
