Obituary (GA): Meyer Hyman Rose '48

Commander Meyer H. Rose, (Ret. USN) of Atlanta, Georgia, died on November 11, 2018, Veterans’ Day, at his home, surrounded by his loving family. He was 92 years old. Mike, as he was known, was born on January 17, 1926 in Minot, North Dakota. As a boy, he moved with his family to Fargo, where his father continued to work as a fur trader. In 1948, Mike graduated from the United States Naval Academy and began an adventurous career as a Naval officer on land, sea and in the air. In 1954, he married Marilyn Viner and together they had two children, Shelley and Meredith. While in the Navy, Mike served as Executive Officer on the USS Rankin, served as a jet pilot and landing signal officer on numerous aircraft carriers, taught flying, and commanded a squadron. He retired from military service in 1973 and began a new career as a small business broker in Atlanta, Georgia. He possessed a great curiosity about life and a desire for new experiences. In his fifties, not only did he earn a law degree and establish a law practice, but he also took up motorcycle riding. He volunteered with SCORE, the DeKalb Democratic Party, and the Better Business Bureau. He taught classes at Emory University for entrepreneurs and took on leadership roles at his local tennis club. He enjoyed hiking in the North Georgia mountains, taking pleasure in identifying plants and flowers. Mike was always an optimist and an independent thinker. He relished life and was immensely devoted to his wife, his daughters and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marilyn, his three brothers, Arthur, Sidney and David in the Boston area, his nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and -nephews and great-grand-nieces and –nephews. He leaves behind his two daughters, Shelley Rose of Atlanta and Meredith Rose (partner Diana Selig) of Pasadena, and his two grandchildren, Anya and Jonah. He is greatly missed by all who were fortunate to truly know him. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 14 at 3 p.m. at The Temple, located at 1589 Peachtree Street, NE, Atlanta, GA 30309. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of one’s choice. Shiva will be held at his residence on Wednesday and Thursday from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Sign online guest book at www.edressler.com.
