Obituary (VA): Cyril Thomas Faulders Jr. '46

Posted on 11/06/2018

TOM FAULDERS, JR.  (November 21, 1922 - November 05, 2018)

Rear Admiral Tom Faulders was born in El Dorado, Kansas in November 21, 1922 and passed away on November 5, 2018.  He was the oldest child of Cyril Thomas Faulders, Sr. and Elizabeth B. Faulders.

He attended El Dorado Junior College and the University of Kansas before receiving his Bachelor of Science degree from the United State Naval Academy (Class of 1946), in June 1945—a member of the Fifth Company.  Additionally, he earned a Masters of Science degree in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a Masters of Business Administration from Stanford University.

He thought his career in the U.S. Navy was the greatest adventure of a lifetime.  He served on the USS Chevalier (DD-805) during World War II.  Following the war, he became a naval aviator specializing in aeronautical engineering, and served with two air squadron tours (VP-4 and VS-38).  He also served on Fleet staffs in both the Pacific and Atlantic, and several naval material organizations, including his last tour as the Assistant Commander of the Naval Air Systems Command.  His decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal (Navy) and the Legion of Merit.

Rear Admiral Faulders retired from the Navy in 1978 after 33 years of service, and then worked with two defense related companies, CACI and VSE, as a project officer for several years.

After his second retirement, Tom and his wife, Bobbe, traveled extensively throughout Europe.  He was a vestryman at the Falls Church (Episcopal) in Virginia, and a Rotarian.  He and Bobbe moved to Fleet Landing in Atlantic Beach, Florida where they both continued active lives.  He served as the president of the Residents Council, and both staffed the local newspaper.   They frequently entertained visiting children, grandchildren and guests.  He often said his was the best life anyone could imagine.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife Bobbe and is survived by his “terrific” family, who include:  Cyril Thomas Faulders III and family of Sullivan’s Island, SC; Jane Elizabeth Faulders of Asheville, NC; John David Faulders and family of Chevy Chase, MD; Patti Faulders Hrovat and family of Monterey, VA; and nine grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held in the Navy Chapel at the US Naval Academy on November 19, 2018 with interment the USNA cemetery.
