Obituary (MD): Michael Joseph Kelly '57

Michael Joseph Kelly  (December 19, 1934 - February 14, 2018)

Michael Joseph Kelly son of John F. and Mary Kelly was born in Passiac, New Jersey on December 19, 1934.

Michael attended local schools graduating from Passaic High School in 1952. After attending Newark College of Engineering for one year, he received an appointment to the Naval Academy from Congressman Gordon Canfield in June of 1953.

After being commissioned as a 2d Lt. in the Marine Corps. Michael had assignments at the following installations: Quantico; Okinawa; on the USS Bon Homme Richard, West PAC; Explosive Ordinance Disposal School, Indian Head, Maryland; and HOMC, Washington. After leaving West PAC, Michael took over the Rifle Company in the 1st Battalion 1st Marines in Vietnam and later became the S-3 for the 3rd Battalion. After returning to the states Michael spent some time in Quantico before shifting to the Reserves where he remained until retirement in 1987.

Michael worked with IBM after leaving active duty pushing the Big Ion for them.

Michael is predeceased by his parents John and Mary Kelly and a brother J.P. Kelly. He is survived by his two sisters; Anne Mascuch (Jerry), Mary Frances (Dr. John), sister in law, Debbie Kelly and his 2nd wife Dr. Judith Poirier Kelly: three children, Coleen Antoon (Jeff ), John (Courtney), Kathleen Foit; nine grandchildren and his first wife Marilyn Kelly.
