Obituary (TN): James Samuel Sorrels Jr. '44

James Samuel Sorrels, Jr., 96, passed away January 24, 2018.  His funeral service will be held at Second Presbyterian Church, 4055 Poplar Ave in the Chapel at 1:00 pm on Tuesday, January 30 th .  Procession to the cemetery will begin at 2:00 pm with a graveside service at approximately 2:15.   Following this service will be a reception for friends and family inside the Memorial Park Funeral Home lounge.  J. Sam, as he was called, was married to Bebe Cullen Sorrels for over 71 years. He was preceded in death by two sons; Fred David Sorrels and James Vernon Sorrels. He is survived by his wife Bebe and son Clifford Cullen Sorrels (Teresa), and three grandchildren Regina C. Sorrels, Ellen M. Sorrels, and Cullen S. Sorrels. J. Sam was born in Poteau, OK, on December 29, 1921 to James Samuel Sorrels, Sr. and Hazel Fincher Sorrels. He was preceded in death by one brother John David Sorrels of Los Angeles. Sam graduated salutatorian from Poteau High School in 1939.  Following his graduation he attended Kemper Military School and College for two years.  Upon graduation he was awarded a Congressional appointment to the United States Naval Academy and served on the USS McDougal as the gunnery officer. After serving is country he was involved in construction, sold automotive oil filters, and eventually became a sales representative for an automotive parts and additive company for over thirty years. His true passion was as a Christian joining Second Presbyterian Church in January 15, 1961 where he faithfully served as Deacon, Elder, Elder Emeritus and Sunday School teacher. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Second Presbyterian Church or charity of donor's choice.
