Obituary (MA): Andrew Daniel Dubino Sr. '53

Posted on 02/12/2018

Andrew Daniel Dubino, Sr., a long-time resident of Greenfield, died of natural causes at Charlene Manor in Greenfield, MA, on February 4, 2018. He was born in 1929 in Greenfield to John and Carrie Dubino.

He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1947 and joined the US Navy that same year. He was accepted into the US Naval Academy in 1949 and graduated in 1953. He served as an officer on the USS Tarawa (1953-1954) and the USS Eldorado (1957-1960); as the commanding officer on the USS Holmes County (1962-1964); and as the executive officer on the USS Beale (1965-1968). He was part of the US Military Assistance Command in Vietnam (1969-1970). Following his tour of duty in Vietnam he was the commanding officer in the United States Navy Recruiting Station in Minnesota (1970-1973).

He retired in 1973, and that same year moved to Bangor, ME, where he owned a gun store, “A. D. Dubino, Gunsmith,” later “A. D. Dubino and Orvis Co.” In 1982 he moved back to Greenfield, where he pursued his interest in craftsmanship. He made fishing rods at Thomas and Thomas; designed models in the Physics Department at Mt. Holyoke College; and created and constructed projects in his own wood and machine shop. Along the way, he wrote columns on hunting and fishing for The Bangor Daily News and The Greenfield Recorder, and his book, Gunsmithing with Simple Hand Tools, is still in print.

He was passionate about hunting, fishing, and gunsmithing. He was an exercise enthusiast, and enjoyed the camaraderie at the gym. He also loved to read histories, work on crossword puzzles, and watch the squirrels and birds outside his window. His family declares he made the best crow call they've ever heard.

He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Nancy Dubino; his daughters Jeanne Dubino, Carrie Dubino, and Lisa Dubino; his son Andrew Dubino; his son-in-law Andrew Smyth; his grandsons Rory and Patrick Donohoe, and Nikolas and Alexander Oaks; his great-grandson Thomas Donohoe; his nephew John Dubino; and his great-nephew Matthew Dubino.

Funeral service will be announced at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, you may send a donation in the name of Andrew Dubino to Friends of FCSO, Regional Dog Shelter and Adoption Center, 10 Sandy Lane, Turners Falls, MA 01376.
