Allan Walter Murray, age 83, of Raleigh, NC died on December 26, 2017. Allan was born in Glencoe, Ill to the late Walter Scott and Mary Sutherland Murray. People just loved to be around Allan, with his quick wit and sense of humor along with his loving and quiet spirit. Allan proudly served his country. He was a 1960 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, retiring after 26 years of service. Following retirement, he was a Naval Science instructor with the ROTC program in the McDowell County high school for 10 years. He enjoyed his memberships with the Kiwanis club, Audubon Society, and First United Methodist Church. His greatest accomplishment was his family, he adored the time he spent with them. Allan is survived by and will be dearly missed by his wife, Barbara Traugott Murray; daughter, Gwen Glenn; son, Eric A. Murray; brother, Donald Murray; sister, Laurie Leigh; grandchildren, Colton Murray, Monica Murray and Joseph Murray; nieces and nephews, Craig Murray, Andrew Murray, Jeanie Murray, Stuart Leigh, John Leigh, Nancy Leigh Thompson, Alison Zehr, Judy Zehr Herbison and Robert Zehr. He is preceded in death by his brothers Kenneth Murray and Ross Murray and one sister, Elizabeth Murray Zehr. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Audubon Society or the Alzheimer's Society.
