Obituary (VA): Ronald Scott Purvis '53

Lt. Cdr. Ronald Scott Purvis  (April 28, 1928 ~ January 3, 2018) (age 89)

Lt. Cdr. Ronald Scott Purvis, USN Ret., 89, husband of Lynne Willis Purvis and a resident of Accomac, VA, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Heritage Hall in Nassawadox, VA.

Born April 28, 1928 in Wakeman, OH, he was a son of the late Samuel Martin Purvis and Dorthea Scott Purvis; and a Protestant and Shriner.

A 1953 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Lt. Cdr. Purvis had a lengthy and successful career serving his country, in the United States Navy.  In 1946, he enlisted in the Navy, and was in the USNR & NROTC while attending Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.  A longtime U.S. Navy Aviator, his career included many decorated achievements and accomplishments.  These include him being the namesake of an Antartic mountain, ‘Purvis Peak’, due to his making the first parachute jump into an Antartic Continent by an official of the U.S. Government.  His many titles also include serving as an Aide to President Kennedy, from 1961 to 1963.  Following his retirement from the Navy in 1972, Lt. Cdr. Purvis continued his education at George Mason University, and his working career in the Real Estate, Insurance and Finance industries.

In addition to his wife, survivors include his children, Ward Scott Purvis, Blair Purvis Sisson, Heather Purvis, and Edward Knight; grandchildren, Elizabeth Snyder, George Snyder, Scott Snyder, and Brady Purvis; and brother, Pete Purvis.

Funeral services and interment with military honors, will be held at a later date, at Arlington National Cemetery.
